Avrupa’da sağanak yağışın etkili olduğu yerlerin başında Almanya ve Polonya geliyor. Özellikle Almanya’nın doğu ve güneyini vuran yağışlar nedeniyle bölgeden 23 bin kişi tahliye edildi. Normal zamanda 5 metre olan Elbe Nehri’nin derinliği 7.43 metreye çıkarak rekor kırdı. Taşan nehir suları ev ve iş yerlerini bastı.

Sel felaketi nedeniyle Magdeburg etrafında görev yapanların sayısı artırıldı ve selden etkilenenler spor salonları ile çevredeki misafirhanelere yerleştirildi. Almanya Başbakanı Angela Merkel, Wittenberge’e giderek gelişmeleri yerinde takip etti: “Gönüllü insanların ve bunu organize eden profesyonellerin yardım çabalarını görmek etkileyici. Federal yönetim adına şunu söyleyebilirim: Bürokratik olmayan acil müdahale yöntemini seçtik. Şu anda yapabildiğimiz ilk şey bu. Fakat bunun milyarlarca Euro zarara yol açacağını biliyoruz.”
